The Honor Societies at EARJ are respected and well-known clubs, although one has long been an “underdog.” However, this is set to change as the Math Honor Society (MAT or Mu Alpha Theta is planning to get back on track and in the game. Theta. They offer a dedicated program that inspires interest in mathematics and aims to deliver a substantial scholarship in the subject while promoting mathematics enjoyment during one’s high school career. Why is any of this important? MAT at EARJ has a firm goal of generating as many opportunities for its members as possible.
One upcoming project not only involves MAT but all the Honor Societies, including SHS (Spanish Honor Society), FHS (French Honor Society), and NHS (National Honor Society). Our new project is a tutoring program for all struggling upper school students. The tutoring program originated in the MAT club and has been going on for many years, but is now being adapted to many other clubs to provide extra support to students. Both tutors and middle school students benefit from the program. Having a student perspective is also excellent because it supplies one with another method of learning. It is just as great for the tutor since one learns to work with others and earns community service hours.
As universities get more competitive and increasingly expensive, getting the needed amount of financial support to get through college becomes a challenge, which leads me to another opportunity MAT offers: Scholarship Opportunities. In MAT, it is a goal of the club to learn about potential Mathematical as well as Stem Scholarships and present them to their members. They aspire to give these opportunities and have one-on-one sessions to outline, fill, and submit any potential scholarships.
Now, how does one become a part of this club? First, there are a few simple requirements that must be satisfied. As MAT is an Honor Society, students have to be recommended by their current Math teacher. Additionally, they must display a passion for learning and hard work. Lastly, they should hold a 3.0 GPA and have completed at least one year of Algebra.
Developing personal bonds with teachers and students is incredibly important, as networking is a great tool to navigate the world. MAT hopes to deepen these relationships through working and learning, with and through each other in every project they can manifest. They have much to contribute to members through CAS hours, scholarship opportunities, and other projects that are still being worked on. These are some ways MAT can benefit one’s high school and college careers while keeping one on track to pursue their goals.
